  57. 1.0 Introduction

  61. This README file contains the installation procedure and usage 
  62. information for the Intel740(tm) graphics accelerator 
  63. software, and latest version of DirectX*. The software and hardware 
  64. requirements for this release are as follows:

  93. The Intel740(tm) graphics accelerator is optimized to run with the 
  94. following PC configurations:
  95. (1) Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R)II processors
  96. (2) Motherboard: Based on the Intel(R) 440LX, 440BX, 440GX AGPset
  97.     or a later generation Intel AGPset, motherboard must have an 
  98.     unpopulated AGP slot or the Intel740 chip must be down on the 
  99.     motherboard
  100. (3) Operating System: Windows* 95 OSR 2.1 or later (with USB 
  101.     Supplement) or Windows* 98.
  102.  
  103. **When loading the Intel740 drivers and OSR2.1 or OSR 2.5 for the 
  104. first time, the software should be loaded in the following order:
  105.     (1) Load OSR2.0 or OSR 2.5
  106.     (2) Load the "USB Supplement" (brings it up to OSR2.1 level or 
  107. OSR2.5)
  108.     (3) Load the Intel740(tm) drivers.
  109.     Note: If this is not done in this order, then the Intel740 drivers 
  110. will not be loaded properly and the standard Microsoft VGA drivers 
  111. will be loaded instead.
  112.  
  113. Also included are release notes describing any problems or issues that 
  114. were known at the time of shipment.

  118. 2.0 Release Notes

  122.  Production Version 1.0 
  123. ------------------------
  124. (1) Supports all 2D and Direct3D operations
  125. (2) Supports software and hardware DVD (glueless interface daughter 
  126. card solutions- Zoran* and C-Cube Mircrosystems*).
  127. (3) Issue: When running Winbench98* quality tests, a page fault error 
  128. may occur when the user selects "All Tests" or "All Quality Tests". 
  129. Intel plans to fix this issue in the next production release of the 
  130. drivers.
  131.

  135. (1) Same as PV1.0, except issue #3 (above) has been fixed.

  138.  Production Version 1.5 
  139. ------------------------
  140. (1) Same as PV 1.0 and 1.0a with additional bug fixes.
  141. (2) TV-Out support has been added (Requires video BIOS VB220) Issues:
  142.     a. NTSC, NTSC-J, and PAL formats supported.
  143.     b. The Brightness, position, size, and flicker filter TV-Out 
  144. settings, accessible in the TV-Out properties page, may need to be 
  145. reset each time the PC system is either reset or powered off. Position 
  146. and size settings may also need to be reset after a display mode 
  147. change.
  148.     c. This driver release has been validated to work with the 
  149. Brooktree*, BT868/869 revision "C" TV-Out encoder, (only).
  150.     d. A portion of the TV display may disappear after a display mode 
  151. change. This has been observed to occur after approximately 200 hours 
  152. of use.
  153.     e. 720 x 480 and 720 x 576 resolutions are not supported in PAL 
  154. mode.
  155.     f. The TV display may become scrambled if the "position" setting, 
  156. accessible in the TV-Out properties page, is adjusted when what is 
  157. displayed on the TV screen exceeds what can be seen on the TV display 
  158. monitor.
  159.     g. In PAL mode, when powering up the PC system, or when in a full 
  160. screen DOS mode, the display may appear too wide for the TV screen. 
  161. Several characters on either side of the TV screen may disappear from 
  162. view.
  163.     h. At the bottom of the display, a one pixel horizontal line may 
  164. appear.
  165.     i. Immediately after power-up, the TV display may appear 
  166. scrambled. This occurs in approximately 1 out of 100 system power-ups.
  167.     j. In a TV-Out only configuration, after entering a DOS window 
  168. from the Windows* desktop, and then going to a full screen DOS window 
  169. (by either hitting alt-enter or the full screen ICON located on the 
  170. Windows* toolbar), the display may become scrambled.
  171.     k. The mouse, not the keyboard, must be used to adjust the 
  172. settings in the TV-Out properties page.
  173.     l. The size control in the TV-Out properties page appears to be 
  174. adjustable when in 800x600 and 720x576 resolutions, however, when 
  175. clicked, they have no effect.
  176.  
  177. (3) Issue: When running WinBench98*, Business Graphics Winmark*, a 
  178. page fault may occur when the test is run multiple times. This has 
  179. been observed on driver release PV1.0, PV1.0a, and PV1.5.
  180.  
  181. --------------
  182.  Version 2.0a
  183. --------------
  184. (1) OpenGL support has been removed from the driver base.  However, a 
  185. separate Intel740 OpenGL Driver Applet exists for developers to use.
  186. (2) Same as PV 1.5 with additional bug fixes (a, b, e, f, g, h, j, l 
  187. from version 1.5).
  188. (3) VFW (Video for Windows*) support has been added w/ Indeo 4.4 codec.
  189. Video for Windows* Issues:
  190.     a. Video capture is not supported in 1600x1200x8 mode.  If it is 
  191. attempted, it may require a reboot.
  192.     b. If window is scaled to a size that is not a multiple of 640 x 
  193. 480 (NTSC) or 768 x 576 (PAL), then the image quality will be reduced.
  194.     c. If using the Intel740 with an Intel440BX based motherboard, the 
  195. BIOS and operating system (OS) should be configured to enable DMA for 
  196. improved frame rates.
  197.     d. In video capture application, 3/8 size button is grayed out in PAL, 
  198. PAL-N, & SECAM source mode.  This size is not supported in these modes.
  199.     e. When using some video capture applications, the capture window (with 
  200. overlay enabled) may not get updated after moving a separate application 
  201. window.
  202.     f. When using some video capture applications, in Full size mode the 
  203. capture may zoom in when it is not needed.
  204.     g. There is a conflict between the Adobe Premiere video capture 
  205. application and the Intel740(tm) PV2.0a drivers.  For proper operation of this 
  206. application, load Adobe Premiere after loading the Intel740 PV2.0a drivers.
  207.  
  208. (4) TV-Out anomalies- you may see some of the following when using
  209. TV-Out:
  210.     a. In PAL mode, a corrupted splash screen may result while 
  211. launching Windows*.
  212.     b. TV-Out size buttons are not disabled (are not grayed out) when 
  213. maximum or minimum size is reached.
  214.     c. Left half of screen may momentarily flash black during a mode 
  215. change.
  216.     d. With TV-Out enabled and the desktop set at 800x600 resolution, 
  217. the entire desktop will not fit in the monitor screen.  The left and 
  218. right sides are cut off.
  219.     e. TV settings may not be restored after returning from a full-
  220. screen DOS box.
  221.     f. Enabling and disabling TV-Out quickly many times can sometimes 
  222. cause system to lock up.  Re-boot is required.
  223.     g. Monitor screen may blank out or screen corruption may be 
  224. visible if running DOS (not Windows* or DDraw) games that use ModeX.
  225.     h. When booting up your system for the first time, an occasional 
  226. split screen (two images) may appear on the TV screen. If this occurs, 
  227. the system will need to be reset. The anomaly occurs more often in PAL 
  228. mode. This anomaly has been seen when using the Intel740(tm) drivers 
  229. (all versions) in combination with the Rockwell BT868/869, Revision 
  230. "C" TV-Out Encoder Component. The above anomaly has not been seen when 
  231. using the Rockwell BT868/869, Revision "D or E" components in 
  232. combination with the Intel740(tm) drivers
  233.  
  234. (5) Intercast Version 1.6 support has been added.  Issues:
  235.     a. Closed captioning does not work in DOS mode.
  236.     b. 4 MB of local video memory is not enough to show pictures at 
  237. 1280x1024x16 mode.  This may also lead to the loss of color and closed 
  238. captioning.
  239.     c. Image may be shifted in window.
  240. (6) TV tuner support with Hauppauge TV tuner has been added.
  241.  
  242. --------------
  243.  Version 2.1
  244. --------------
  245. (1) Same as PV 2.0a except OpenGL support has been integrated.
  246.  
  247. --------------
  248.  Version 3.0w
  249. --------------
  250. Same as PV2.1 except the following features were added:
  251. (1) VFW/video in support was removed.
  252. (2) Multi-monitor support was added in conjunction with the VB231 video Bios.
  253. (3) Intel tested for PC98 WHQL compliance.
  254. (4) A Digital Signature Feature has been added to the gfxw.inf file to satisfy 
  255.     Microsoft* WHQL Certification requirements. 
  256.     
  257.     **Important: The Digital Signature feature within the gfxw.inf file has been 
  258.                  commented out. For WHQL Submission those commented lines must be 
  259.                  uncommented to reflect the respective IHV's information.
  260.  
  261.     Please refer to the PC98 WHQL Test Procedures for additional information.
  262.

  269. 3.0  Intel740 Graphics Accelerator Driver Installation Procedure
  270. **********************************************************************
  271.  
  272. ----------------------------
  273.  General Installation Notes
  274. ----------------------------
  275. ** The operating system and DirectX* must be installed on the system 
  276. prior to installation (note: DirectX* is provided on the CD along with 
  277. the Intel740 drivers). To update or install DirectX*, simply go to the 
  278. DirectX* directory on the CD and click on "Setup.exe".
  279.  
  280. ** This installation procedure is specific only to the version of 
  281. driver and installation file included in this release. 
  282.  
  283. ** The ".INF" file is the installation file and includes all of the 
  284. driver and Graphics properties page files associated with this 
  285. release.
  286.  
  287. ** This procedure assumes that all of the software associated with 
  288. this release is located in the same directory.
  289.  
  290. ------------------------------------------------------
  291.  Installing the Drivers from floppy disk or hard disk
  292. ------------------------------------------------------
  293.  
  294. (1) After Windows* has loaded, click on "My Computer" icon, "Control 
  295. Panel" icon, and then the "Display" icon.
  296.  
  297. (2) You should now be in the "Display Properties" window.  Select the 
  298. "Settings" tab, and click on the "Advanced Properties" button. 
  299.  
  300. (3) In the "Advanced Display Properties" window, select the "Adapter" 
  301. tab, and click the "Change..." button.
  302.  
  303. For Windows* 95 installation, continue to Step 4.  In Windows* 98, the 
  304. following window appears:
  305.  
  306. (A) The "Update Device Driver Wizard" window appears.  If you are 
  307. installing the Intel740(tm) graphics accelerator card and drivers for 
  308. the first time, this window may denote Intel740(tm) graphics 
  309. accelerator as a "Standard PCI VGA Graphics Adapter."  Click on the 
  310. "Next" button to continue.
  311.  
  312. (B) A new window appears, prompting for weather to have Windows*  
  313. search for a device driver or to manually select one.  Click the 
  314. option for "Display a list of all the drivers in  a specific location, 
  315. so you can select the driver you   want." After this, click on the 
  316. "Next" button, and continue to Step 4.
  317.  
  318. Continue with both Windows* 95 and Windows* 98 installation from this 
  319. point.
  320.  
  321. (4) From the new window, click on the "Have Disk" button.
  322.  
  323. (5) You should now be in the "Install From Disk" window. In the "Copy 
  324. manufactures files from:" box, enter the location of the Intel740(tm) 
  325. graphics accelerator drivers and press the "OK" button.
  326.  
  327. (6) A window should pop up stating that the " Intel740-854 Win9x 
  328. PV3.0W 3.1.2029-980829" drivers are about to be installed.  Click the 
  329. "OK" button to accept the display driver change, and then click the 
  330. "Close" button in the "Advanced Display Properties" window as well as 
  331. the "Display Properties" window to complete the installation.  Restart 
  332. the computer when prompted to do so.
  333.  
  334. (7) The drivers should now be loaded. To determine if the drivers have 
  335. been loaded correctly, Refer to the "Verifying Installation" section, 
  336. below.
  337.  
  338. **** Verifying Driver Installation
  339.  
  340. (1) From the Windows* 9x desktop, click on "My Computer", then "Control 
  341. Panel", and then, finally, "System".
  342.  
  343. (2) You should be in the "System Properties" window.  Click on the 
  344. "Device Manager" tab.  From here, go down to "Display Adapter" and 
  345. click. The drivers associated with the display adapter should read: 
  346. "Intel740-854 Win9x PV3.0W 3.1.2029-980829". If this is not the case, 
  347. the drivers will need to be re-installed.
  348.
